FROM THE REGION MANAGER Shaun Connell

Strong Year For Umpiring in GVFUA

There is plenty to celebrate across umpiring in Goulburn Murray, with 293 having registered in the 2026 season, an increase of 3.9%.

A key driver of this success has been the outstanding retention of existing umpires. Of the current registrations, 217 officials have returned from last season, highlighting the strong culture, support networks and development opportunities that exist in the Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association (GVFUA). At the same time, 66 new umpires have joined the ranks, ensuring a healthy pipeline of emerging talent for years to come.

Growth has been recorded across all major umpiring disciplines, with 158 Field Umpires, 110 Boundary Umpires and 59 Goal Umpires now registered. This depth will play an important role in supporting competitions across the Goulburn Murray region throughout coming seasons.

The umpiring group remains a youthful one, with a median age of just 20 years, while more than half of all registered umpires have three or more years of experience. This balance between emerging officials and experienced mentors provides a strong foundation for ongoing development and performance.

While overall numbers are trending positively, the data also highlights opportunities to continue growing diversity within the program. Increasing participation among women, multicultural communities and First Nations participants remains an important focus as the region works to create an umpiring pathway that reflects the communities it serves.

Overall, the 2027 season is shaping up as another positive year for umpiring in Goulburn Murray. Strong retention, steady recruitment and registrations already exceeding target demonstrate the dedication of local umpires, coaches, mentors and umpire administrators who continue to play a critical role in supporting community football across the region.

Community Football Registration & Transfer Update for 2027

Community Football registrations for the 2027 season will open on 1 November 2026, one month later than the previous opening date.

The November Transfer Period will again be in place, providing clubs and players with a familiar process ahead of the new season.

The revised registration timeline allows additional time for the National team to review developments in privacy, safeguarding and consent legislation, and assess any implications for the registration process, including registration terms and conditions.

Clubs are encouraged to note the new registration opening date and plan accordingly as preparations begin for the 2027 season.

Further information: Refer to the registration and transfer memorandum distributed on 25 September.

Women & Girls Football Survey & Forums

Women and girls football across the Goulburn Murray has experienced remarkable growth, driven by the dedication of players, families, clubs, coaches, volunteers, officials and umpires.

As the competition transitions into the newly established Goulburn Murray League, we have an exciting opportunity to plan for the future and ensure the competition remains strong, inclusive and sustainable for years to come.

To support this process, a Women and Girls Football Forum will bring together clubs, participants and key stakeholders to explore future opportunities for junior girls, youth and women's football. The forum will provide a valuable opportunity to share ideas, discuss challenges and help shape future football pathways across the region.

Thank you to all clubs and individuals who have provided feedback through the pre-forum survey. We received 57 responses, which will now shape the upcoming sessions.

Together, we can create a stronger, more inclusive and sustainable future for women and girls football across the Goulburn Murray region.

Child safety is everyone’s responsibility, but for those in leadership, coaching and decision-making roles, it is critical. Following the recent landmark National Sports Tribunal (NST) case, Netball Victoria is delivering important online child safety education sessions for Leagues, Associations and Clubs.

These sessions will share key learnings from the case and provide practical guidance on identifying red flags, taking action, understanding reporting responsibilities, and recognising the impacts, repercussions and consequences when concerns are missed or not addressed appropriately.

Attendance is mandatory for Presidents, Committee Members, Child Safety Officers, Head Representative Coaches (or equivalent roles), Operations Managers and Coordinators in our associations and leagues (clubs strongly recommended). Representative Coaches, community/domestic coaches and Complaints Managers are also strongly encouraged to attend.

In this session, you will:

  • Learn about red flags that need to be taken seriously and acted upon

  • Discuss what action should look like when concerns arise

Learn how to apply the Transaction Fee Changes in Netball Connect. These changes come into effect on 1st October 2026

As mentioned in previous emails, transaction fee changes are being applied across all businesses in Australia from 1st October 2026. This is due to the Reserve Bank changes and means that credit card transaction and payment platform fees can no longer be added as a separate surcharge at checkout and must be included in the total advertised price. This is really important for associations, league and clubs to understand before you open registration in 2027 (registration will open in October). Please note, this transaction fee only applies to fees you charge through Netball Connect and members are paying this currently (added on at the end of the transaction). If you invoice or receive direct deposits you do not need to worry about transaction fee charges as they are only applied in systems with transaction fee charges. To learn more about these fees please click here. To see how these fees are applied in Netball Connect from the 1st October 2026, please refer to our resource page with a demonstration video here
