On behalf of AFL Goulburn Murray, we extend our congratulations to April Le Sueur on this well-deserved recognition of her outstanding contribution to the Rumbalara Football Netball Club.
April has proudly served the club in many roles, including Women’s Football Team Manager, Chair of the Women’s Football Committee, and as a valued Board Member.
An extraordinary young Aboriginal leader, April Atkinson has shown tireless passion and dedication in transforming women’s football at Rumbalara FNC. As the driving force behind the Rumbalara Women’s Football Team, she has built a full squad from the ground up in both 2024 and 2025, leading them to this year's finals in the Goulburn Murray Women’s and Girls competition.
Though often described as a quiet achiever, April’s leadership has empowered countless Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women particularly single mothers and those overcoming barriers or mental health challenges by creating a family-friendly, culturally affirming environment centred on sport, connection, and belonging.
At just 24 years old, April commits most evenings to the club, inspiring the community with her selflessness, vision, and drive. Her impact extends far beyond the field, building a movement of inclusion, resilience, equity, and pride.
April’s work exemplifies what it means to lead with heart, and she is a truly deserving recipient of State and National recognition.
April was one of 75 volunteers nominated by clubs across the Goulburn Murray Region, the highest number of nominations from any region or metropolitan league in the state.
AFL Goulburn Murray and AFL Victoria remain committed to supporting volunteers and clubs through the work of the Club Development Lead and state and regional staff, delivering programs that make it easier to run strong, sustainable community clubs.
